One Year of Government: The Railway Industry Association's Review of UK Rail

02 July 2025

Summary

The Railway Industry Association (RIA) has today published a Review of the Government’s progress on rail, in the week that it marks its first 12 months in office since coming to power on 5 July 2024.

In the report, entitled “One Year of Government – The Railway Industry Association’s Review of UK Rail”, RIA has judged progress using three categories:

i) Key RIA ‘Ask’ fulfilled;

ii) Whilst not yet delivered, there has been visible progress/announcements; and

iii) Progress is unclear, there has not yet been visible evidence of progress. RIA has not speculated on activities that may be happening within Government but are not yet visible.

RIA’s analysis considers several long-standing objectives, from the need to progress the Railways Bill to create Great British Railways and begin the legislative process and develop long-term rail strategy, to strengthening ambition on private funding and delivering more visible and predictable pipelines of rail work to boost jobs and investment.
