New outdoor STEM classroom opened for children in Carstairs Junction

6 April 2022 | Siemens Mobility

  • Carstairs Junction Primary School gets a new ‘garden’ classroom – named by the school’s pupils as ‘The Four Seasons Classroom’
  • Funded by Siemens Mobility, and focused on STEM, it will help develop an interest in Scotland’s rail industry amongst the next generation
  • The classroom was constructed by local SMEs, supporting Scotland’s economy

Children at Carstairs Junction Primary School are set to benefit from a new outdoor classroom, which was opened officially today, 22 March 2022.

The classroom provides space for educational activities that will help the pupils learn about Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects – as well as the rail industry – helping them to prepare for successful careers in the future.

Jill Armour, Headteacher at Carstairs Junction Primary said: “We were delighted to work with Siemens Mobility on this concept. Students will benefit from engaging in interactive activities for STEM subjects this early on and develop their true interests.”

Campbell Braid, Operations Director Scotland, Rail Infrastructure for Siemens Mobility and Signalling Programme Director, Signalling Collaborative Partnership said: “As well as delivering this great new asset for the school, we were delighted to be able to support Scotland’s economy by contracting local SMEs to work on the construction.”

Carstairs Junction is a key section of the West Coast Main Line linking Glasgow and Edinburgh to London. Siemens Mobility is keen to invest in the local area as it delivers the next stages of the signalling element within the Carstairs Mordernisation project – part of a multi-billion-pound investment by the Scottish Government to improve Scotland’s railway. Siemens Mobility won the contract for this work from Network Rail Scotland in 2021.

The cost of the materials and construction was covered by Siemens Mobility, which used local SMEs – such as CK Contracts – to deliver the project.
