Network Rail, Railway Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) and the Great British Railways Transition Team (GBRTT) have prepared an initial whole industry plan for Research, Development and Innovation (RD&I) during Control Period 7 (CP7).

In July 2022, some of RIA members were involved in a workshop with GBRTT to discuss innovation in the Whole Industry Strategic Plan (WISP) context, looking at long term goals and initiatives. Hosted by the Railway Industry Association, this new briefing event will consider the next five-year funding period CP7 which will cover 2024-2029 which is the first five years of the WISP timeframe.

The goal of this event is to share the initial plan for RD&I and to seek input from suppliers and partners, especially looking for collaboration and co-funding opportunities that can support the programme.
             .
After the event there will be an open consultation lasting four weeks and closing on 10 September 2022. This consultation will include questions about the innovations that your business could bring forward to support 8 themes which are being considered in the CP7 plan. These themes are:

  • Passengers experience and accessibility
  • Enabling freight growth
  • Optimisation and resilience of assets
  • Optimised and resilient train operations
  • Environmental Sustainability
  • Enabling digitalisation
  • Increasing automation
  • Sustainability of branch lines
